“Kelprojektas” will be designing the Simnas bypass for 1.7 million Litas

Kelprojektas signed a contract with the Lithuanian Road Administration (LRA) for the design of the Simnas bypass. The contract is valued at 1.729 million Lt. The planned design works will be completed by January 2017.

Road No. 131, which is of national significance, connects Alytus to Kalvarijos. The overall length of the road is 57.12 kilometres. The bypass is planned for the km 22.40-29.33 section of the road, at around the city of Simnas.

“Since this is one of the main roads used by transit traffic travelling to countries in Europe through the Kalvarijos border checkpoint, it constantly experiences very large volumes of commercial vehicle traffic. As such, the inhabitants of nearby settlements, especially those of Simnas, are forced to suffer high levels of noise and environmental pollution. To solve this problem, it is planned to design and build a bypass that would allow the flow of transit traffic to avoid the town’s central street,” said Algirdas Vrubliauskas, mayor of Alytus District Municipality.

According to the road traffic volume data*, collected by SE Transport and Road Research Institute of the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Lithuania, the average daily traffic of the Alytus-Simnas-Kalvarija road in 2013 measured at 2,484 vehicles, 750 of which were commercial vehicles. Forecasts indicate that this road is expected to be used by 2,697 vehicles each day by 2025.

“Due to such high volumes of traffic, speed limitations are put into place in towns and settlements, car drivers find it difficult to overtake or pass by commercial vehicles, the likelihood of traffic accidents increases. This is why our specialists are aiming to not only conduct thorough investigations, but also present the most optimal solutions for solving the current situation,” says Algirdas Medžiaušis, CEO of Kelprojektas UAB.

According the Simnas bypass project coordinator, Benas Bermonas – a Project Manager of the Road Department at Kelprojektas UAB – the bypass project consists of 4 main stages. First of all, various geodetic, geological, economical (as relates to the road section) and other surveys will have to be carried out, project solutions will have to be prepared and the best proposals for the Simnas bypass route will have to be presented. Then, in accordance with the Simnas bypass route approved by the LRA, a special plan will be prepared and a carriageway necessary for the implementation of the prepared project solutions will be designed.

The third stage will involve preparing a property expropriation project and completing all the necessary procedures in accordance with the approved special plan. The technical project will be prepared during the final stage – that is, technical drawings will be completed, the cost of the construction of the road will be estimated, construction design documents for the viaduct over the railway and the bridge across the river Spernia will be prepared and other works will be carried out.
