2018-11-27

We are pleased and proud of the certificate of appreciation received from the Lithuanian Road Administration for a significant contribution to the reconstruction of the Via Baltica section between Kaunas and Marijampolė into the first highway after the restoration of independence of Lithuania.

On 27 November 2018, the Minister of Transport and Communications Rokas Masiulis and the head of the European Commission Representation in Lithuania Arnoldas Pranckevičius officially opened the reconstructed section of Via Baltica highway between Kaunas and Marijampolė. The entire road, which is important for Lithuanian and international communications, has already been expanded to 4 traffic lanes and now corresponds to the requirements for the highways. It is expected that this reconstruction work will reduce the accident rate by about 70%.

“In Lithuania, this is the first highway in more than 20 years. This is the road that was eagerly awaited by the entire region and drivers in transit. The highway, which meets the highest requirements for highways, will be an important part of the North-South transport artery, improving the connection with the Baltic and other European countries, maximising the safety of the road users with engineering measures”, says Minister of Transport and Communications R. Masiulis.

According to Vitalijus Andrejevas, Director of the Lithuanian Road Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Communications, not only the expansion of the highway is important for traffic safety, but also the fact that there are no one level intersections anymore in the reconstructed sections between Kaunas and Marijampolė, 10 overpasses, 2 roundabouts, 3 different level intersections and connecting roads for local transport have been built. Animal-vehicle collisions will be prevented by net fences, barriers, jump-off ramps and underground passage for animals.

Expansion works of the Via Baltica highway section between Kaunas and Marijampolė have been carried out since 2015.
